10x wat niemand je vertelt over jouw newborn

10 things no one tells you about your newborn

10 things no one tells you about your newborn

The time has come, labor is imminent & you are finally going to meet your baby! You have read every book out there, maybe even taken a course & so you feel prepared for everything! Surprise, surprise. A whole new world opens up as soon as he/she is here. You haven't read or heard these things before & that's why we are telling you.

1. 'My baby sleeps through the night' - Don't celebrate too soon

You have given birth, the maternity care is there & your baby sleeps for 18 to 20 hours a day and those few times you have to get out of bed at night are easy to handle, right? Is this really what everyone finds so difficult? But then... when your baby is a few weeks old, your real new life begins. Maybe you are one of the lucky ones whose baby quickly falls into a deep sleep, but there is a good chance that the broken nights are now starting to break you. And not only at night, but also during the day your baby keeps you quite busy. A quick shower, folding the laundry, going shopping or just going to the toilet? Your baby is now the boss and completely determines the rhythm of your day. And sometimes that takes some getting used to.

2. Breathe in and breathe out

You also sometimes hang over the crib to hear if your baby is still breathing. In a newborn baby, breathing can sometimes be a bit irregular. This means you might not hear anything for ten seconds and then the breathing suddenly resumes at a very fast pace. In your baby's little head, the signals from the brain to the lungs are not yet completely smooth and that causes this irregular breathing.

3. Pee and poop

That little baby boys pee as soon as you change the diaper is something you can live with. What might be a bit of a shock – for both boys and girls – is your baby's squirty poop. SQUIRTY poop, poop that literally squirts right into your curtains. So caution is advised when changing a diaper. Oh and that pooping is definitely a thing. Because especially babies who are breastfed can just not poop for a day or so. So that doesn't always have to be very serious. And you thought that was everything? It can also just happen that your baby literally poops all over. From buttocks to neck, so that is understandable, and that doesn't happen once, but sometimes five times in one day!

4. Woken up by EVERYTHING

A cough, a deep sigh, a head turn or a kicking foot. Whatever it is, you are now woken up by every little sound.

5. Plop, pacifier in & go

Another thing that always seems to go so smoothly. A crying baby, pop a pacifier in and the baby is quiet. Could no one tell you that sucking on a pacifier is quite difficult for a newborn baby? That the pacifier therefore constantly pops out of their mouth and you have to keep putting it back in. Our hydrophylic pacifier toys to the rescue! Or how about your pinky? Never knew your pinky could work as a pacifier for hours and that you therefore cannot go anywhere.

6. At the breast

It always seems so easy... a baby drinking from the breast & you just doing everything at the same time. In reality, it sometimes takes quite a while before feeding goes smoothly. And that it causes some tears and frustration is completely understandable. Because how do you position them properly and what is a comfortable position? Not to mention nipple chafing, chafing and engorgement! Fortunately, you usually find a good rhythm after a week or so and feeding becomes much easier than in those first few days.

7. Pimples

And you thought only teenagers had acne? No, a baby can also be covered in little bumps... yes, baby acne. These little bumps are caused by the hormones your baby received and are now leaving their body. Fortunately, the bumps disappear after a few weeks.

8. Block your credit card

And especially during the nighttime feeding sessions, you are irresponsible. That there was so much to offer, you could never have imagined. But be careful, because before you know it you spend a whole month's salary on cute clothes and shoes.

9. Slippery slippery

Splashing in the bath with your little one is lovely, but how could you know that he would become super slippery in a bath with bath oil. You are probably not the first one to get cold feet when the baby has to get out of the bath. Because how do you get such a slippery little one into his towel without an accident?

10. I miss you

Your baby is so incredibly cute. Never thought that – even if he sleeps in the same room – you could miss his soft skin and his cute little face so much!
