How do you choose your baby's name?
Some people know from a young age what their baby is going to be called. Others can't make up their minds until week 40 of the pregnancy. We often get messages from women who are looking for a nice name. On our Insta & FB Feed you will find plenty of nice names. We have also created a special 'name inspiration' story under our highlights on Instagram.
How did we choose the names of our boys ourselves? Thiago, Dex, Rafa & Tido, not names you hear every day. But also not so crazy that you can't pronounce them. That we both wanted a unique name was certain, but we had different ideas about a name. Thank goodness, because there are only 3 days between the births of Thiago & Dex. It just so happens that you might have chosen the same name, haha.
'Our' names you won't find in the top 10 boy names. Read below how we chose the names!
Thiago - Comes from Santiago. Maaike is completely in love with Spain. That's why it was certain that it would have to be a Spanish name. And then you have sooooooo many choices, haha. We browsed through a lot of name websites looking for a name. We both made a selection & then just let it sink in for a few weeks. Then we both stated a first choice. Thiago won with dad, mom chose Luís. We eventually chose Thiago Luís, where Thiago became his calling name, because that just felt right to both of us!
Dex - Comes from Dexter. For as long as Femke has known her boyfriend and Dex's dad, they have been fans of the series Dexter. For them, it was therefore also certain for a long time that if they were to have a boy, he would be called Dex. Very funny, because when Dex was born, the name had almost never been chosen. That is different now! Dex also has a 2nd name Daley, yes, after Daley Blind. Just because it's a nice name and dad is a fan of Ajax, haha.
Rafa - Comes from Rafael. When we, Maaike, went for the 2nd and discovered that it would be another boy, we had to think carefully about a nice new boy name. Of course it had to be something Spanish again. It had to match Thiago. Not too crazy or difficult to pronounce. Coming up with 2 names in 1.5 years is quite a challenge. Yet in the meantime, a very nice app had been developed, Kinder. Tinder, but for baby names. The principle is very handy & actually just like the dating app, with all that swiping! I could do that too, haha. A name that kept coming back was Rafael. But I still thought it was a bit classic or something. Until Thiago and I watched a Spanish cartoon together, Rafa Giraffa. That was the 'Yes, that's the one!' moment! Just a bit cooler than Rafael and very unique. So funny, that a name you kind of came up with yourself comes back again as a request. So there is another mini Rafa in NL now! Rafa's full name is Rafael, Miguel as a 2nd name. After his dad who is named Michiel!
Tido - Comes from ??? Also Femke heard during her 2nd pregnancy that she would have another boy. And however crazy it sounds. This name was found like this! Coincidentally, dad's colleague is named Tiddo & he thought it was such a nice name that it got on the list. Tido actually became the name by itself, by pronouncing it every time again. This name also turned out to exist! Then of course there was still a lot of searching, because yes, do you stick with the 1st name or do you still switch. Yet it kept coming back every time, so it couldn't be anything else but this name! Tido's 2nd name is Cody, this name also comes from the series Dexter, for the fans the stepson of Dexter in the series, haha.
