Waar moet je op letten bij een speenkoord?

What should you look out for with a pacifier clip?

Never again a pacifier on the ground with such a beautiful, hip pacifier clip—that is the purpose of a pacifier clip. Besides looking really cute on your little one, it also has a very practical function. But did you know that there are very strict EU requirements? After all, children are still very innocent & you naturally don't want anything to happen to them.

Safety for baby products actually consists of two parts. On the one hand, the product must be completely safe. For pacifier clips, these requirements are laid down in the so-called NEN 12586 standard. On the other hand, parents are also responsible for safe use. Some things seem very obvious, but we still occasionally see that our safety instructions are not followed ;-).

We explain more below about what to look out for when buying & using a pacifier clip.

A safe pacifier clip
A pacifier clip is not a toy for your child, but a practical aid. As you may know, toys in the EU are tested before they are placed on the market (at least, that is the NVWA's expectation). Pacifier clips fall outside this scope because they are officially not classified as toys. However, they are intended for children & therefore the EU has established safety standards for them: NEN 12589. This standard describes specific requirements, such as a cord thickness of 2 mm & a maximum safe length of 22 cm measured from the clip. This is also why we omit colored beads from longer names! And did you know what the holes in the clip are for? You probably don't want to know, but if a child somehow swallows the clip, the holes prevent it from blocking the airway.

In addition to a number of standard requirements, the NEN also describes the testing procedure. You can carry this out & document it yourself, or have it tested by an independent party. You will then receive the test results, which you can include in your dossier.

In the Netherlands, anyone can buy these standards & comply with them in their own way. Anyone can therefore make a pacifier clip & sell it online without it necessarily having been tested. The NVWA policy is to test products only after they are on the market or when complaints are received.

In short, if you want to be sure that you are using a safe product for your child, don't let yourself be distracted by the pretty pictures, but take a closer look at the website & check whether these safety standards are met. Here you can read a short summary of the standards. All our products are fully tested & safe, which is exactly why we wrote this blog to catch your attention, of course. But you can, of course, buy elsewhere—there are several other shops that also have their bases covered!

Safe use of a pacifier clip
Besides having a safe product, using it safely is at least just as important, of course. A pacifier clip is not a toy, but it is often given to babies as one. A pacifier clip has a clip that can be attached to a garment, so it cannot get caught anywhere & for example, cannot get around the neck.
We also regularly see babies being put to bed with a pacifier clip. This is also not intended; always supervise your child & prevent the risk of suffocation.

Even though the product fully complies with the standards, something can, of course, always break (possibly due to frequent use). That is why we recommend checking the cord before each use, so you can be sure that no parts have come loose. As mothers of four boys, we think this is only natural—after all, you check every toy, and even Fisher-Price toys can break & become dangerous, haha.
