How to take the most beautiful newborn photos yourself: 10 tips
The moment is here. Your baby is born! And they are so small, with tiny little hands, tiny little feet, and such a cute little nose! You could look at them for hours & you will take lots of photos to capture this moment forever. You can have a professional photographer take newborn photos, which is really cool! You can also do it yourself if you enjoy photography. Or simply do both, because you have plenty of time together with your baby during the first few weeks! In this blog, we’ll give you 10 tips for taking the most beautiful photos!
- During your pregnancy, find out what you like in terms of photography. Good preparation is half the battle. For example, if you want to use props such as a hat or swaddle, make sure you have them at home. You can also browse Instagram and Pinterest for the most beautiful and original examples!
- When? During the first few days, you will naturally need time to get used to each other and your new situation. This is also when many babies still sleep a lot and mostly lie still. Our newborn photographer’s tip is to do it within the first two weeks!
- Be patient. Of course, you hope to have taken the perfect photo as soon as possible, but it is still a little baby with a mind of its own. They might start crying or pee all over your setup.
- Timing is everything. Make sure your baby is completely content. The perfect moment is when the baby has just woken up, has a clean diaper, and has been fed. It is also a good idea to make the room where you are going to shoot nice and warm and comfortable. Still not in the mood? Just try again later, as mentioned above.
- Assistance is key. Luckily, my dear sister came to help with the 2nd. I only had to position the babies & she could take the perfect shot. Also handy if your baby suddenly decides to spit up a wave of milk, haha.
- Posing. Hopefully, you have gathered plenty of inspiration from tip 1. Before you start photographing, decide which poses you want to do. Sometimes you just have to be quick.
- It’s all in the detail. Your baby is so small and delicate, how beautiful it is to capture all these little details. The 10 little toes, the little nose, or their little hand in yours. Another fun idea: capture your baby next to something larger, so your baby looks even smaller.
- Daylight, daylight, daylight. The best weather is cloudy weather, during the day. This way you will have the fewest strange shadows and the softest light. Of course, you can’t always get your way, but flash photography is not always ideal.
- Background. Will you go for lifestyle photos in the bedroom or a background with wallpaper? Both have their charm. For both options, the key is that it exudes a sense of calm, so all the focus is on the baby (and not on that screaming wallpaper or dirty diaper in the corner).
- Lots and lots. Take lots of photos! Even if you think it isn’t working out or isn’t perfect. It is precisely the spontaneous photos that you will look back on in the photo albums & bring back the best memories!
